Ontlametse

Ontlametse

The witty 12-year-old from Hebron, in Gauteng, exudes the confidence of someone far older. Despite her tiny body, she wants people to take her seriously.
Ontlametse, who resembles an ageing woman, is the only known black female born with the extremely rare premature ageing disease progeria.
After 10 years of wondering why she was so small and enduring scorn from classmates and teachers, who said that she was HIV-positive, the girl with sensitive transparent skin and wrinkled, knobbly hands was diagnosed as one of only about 78 people in the world with the disease.
She has a life expectancy of 13 years but her mother, Bellon Phalatse, prays that her only daughter will live for “many more years”.
“She knows she’s going to die; she has just accepted it. I wish she’ll live longer than that.”
But little Ontlametse is unfazed about her condition and only wants to enjoy life.
“It’s nice that I have accepted who I am. I don’t care what people say. I’m proud of myself. I’m glad I know who I am,” she said with a huge smile on her face.
Katlego Mathabe, her only school friend, describes Ontlametse as self-confident and beautiful.
The grade 7 pupil, who is the same height as a four-year-old, wants to be a psychologist and hates missing school for doctors’ appointments.
“Since I really learned about my disease, maybe I can counsel kids because I did psychology by myself,” she quips.
Despite her self-confident outlook, life has not been easy for her.
When she was about three years old, her father abandoned the family, unable to deal with his daughter’s appearance.
Said Phalatse of her daughter: “If I don’t love her, who will? I thank God I didn’t hide her, I didn’t put her in a room and lock her up.”
When Ontlametse was diagnosed, a doctor at the University of Pretoria arranged for her to join a clinical trial in the US.
During school holidays, she flies to Boston University’s Progeria Research Foundation, where scientists are trying to find a cure for the condition.
A label on her bottle of pills has an orange warning: “New drug limited by US Federal law for investigational use.”
Ontlametse giggles when she says she is the only person in Hebron who has been to the US four times.
“People ask me why I’m like this and why I’m going to America. They think maybe I’m going there because my mum is rich,” she said.
But her mother, who is unemployed, depends on her daughter’s disability grant and flights to the US are paid for by the researchers.
Phalatse said Ontlametse had several allergies and even buying her rice-milk powder and fresh green vegetables was impossible.
“Sometimes when my mummy has money she buys lettuce and cucumbers and things that I like.”
At the top of her wish-list, though, is a specially designed wig, costing R15000, that Vodacom last week agreed to pay for, along with a wheelchair.
A food hamper, boarding school fees, a wheelchair, medical assistance, meeting Nelson Mandela and a home for her family are among the energetic young girl’s wishes.

Be the change you want to see in the world

Afternoon Kandies

Its Thursday again and time for my weekly update on what i think is interesting. I hope you guys have had a lovely week and that its about to get better. In case you were wondering,i wont only up once a week, ive just been tied up with tests and even i am a little busy,il post alot of new stuff so as to keep it fresh and "fantabulous"!!

I woke up really inspired today,I remember something that Michelle Obama said when she came to South Africa and that is the title of this post "Be the change you want to see in the world".One thing that you guys should know about me,in case you haven't picked it up yet is that im obsessed with "Legacy", Ive gotten it in my head that I'm a SUPERBEING such as Nelson Mandela and the late Steve Jobs, a pioneeer of im not sure what and that i will change the world and be remembered for centuries after my time. With that said,i truly believe there's greatness in all of us and if we would just tap into it,delve a little deeper, dream a little bigger, try a litttle harder,we would be SUPERBEINGS.

As i mentioned,i am a little fanatical about this subject but it just amazes me that we live in this world that's always evolving, better and new things always popping up.To think there was a time without electricity, cars, computers, cellphones and all the wonderful inventions that fuel our sedentary lifestyle(LOL!Its true though,we are very lazy but brilliant) and one day someone woke up with an idea to alter the comfort of the world they were living in.I really feel if that spark can be in a handful of us,surely its in us all? Yes,you are looking around after having read that sentence and thinking "No way its in this douchebag im sitting next too" and i agree, some people don't look it,its really really really deep inside. o_O

Its a rife notion especially in South Africa and yes, particularly black people, who endured a lot living in the Apartheid regime, that you have to wait for the next person to do something for you.We look to our neighbours, the government and people overseas to disengage with what they are doing and care about what might be bothering you.Come on people!!We have the same hours as they do,lets make it count.

To my South Africans, our forfathers fought for freedom, they were brave, resilient, able to forsee a time in which they werent living in.We,luckily, do not have to do that anymore but lets make up for that with a million mega watts of ingenuity, gusto and greatness.

It all starts with us.Think of all that bothers you and see what you can do about it or meditate on what you feel its missing in the world and "free fall into the unknown|"

"Thats all i have to say about that"

Steve Jobs(February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011)

My Beloved Kandies

I'm really saddened by the death of Steve Jobs, i have a soft spot for Apple, they are doing great things and to have one of their captains pass before his time is a great tragedy. I will admit that I only recently heard of Steve Jobs in the hilarious (I don't use that word lightly) movie "Crazy,Stupid,Love starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, after that i just felt like he was popping everywhere as it happens when you first notice something. Its funny how that happens.Anyway,i know he will rest in peace as he has left an incredible legacy, something we should all aspire to.I hope to make my mark in this world and as I hope u shall as well.

Good Afternoon Kandies

This is my first post and |I'm so excited to share my life with the World Wide Web. I'm  hoping i'll look back when i'm wildly successful and famous and say "Wow!Who knew my first little humble post who catapult me to such dizzying(is this a word?) heights that not even my hearts of hearts could have imagined." That is however a conversation for the future, kids!

What does one blog about, for I am unsure,I have a million thoughts gushing through my head but i guess its want interests me right now and that is...........

I can definitely tell you what it wont be about "MEDICINE"!Bleh!Maybe you are thinking "how random",well I'm a medical student and lets just say I'm interested in everything else except MEDICINE!That's not a fair statement because I actually do care a little bit but I feel since this 9-5 has consumed so much of my life for the past 5 years that I want to use this platform for something fun and that goes beyond science and coughs and bleeds and pungent smells. Not to say its not important but let touch and change the world in a different way.You dig?

I should also mention that i like to look at things from different angles and hypothesize so it may come across as hypocritical and contradictory,at times but that is the nature of the game here, lets try keep up,shall we?

Gosh,I'm already having so much fun!!!Welcome to the little space where there is no censorship,no one is wrong and where we can all be ourselves!
